pWhat is the ZF that gives its name to the automatic transmission? Hello everyone.

What is the ZF that gives its name to the automatic transmission

We started a series about brand and logo meanings of cars as you know and you like. Today well mention to another brand. Its not an automobile brand but a brand that produces car components.

Its name is ZF. Why we need to introduce ZF, because most of our followers think that ZF is a synonym word of automatic transmission. So, it looks like brand gave its name to its product, we call this situation as generic brand. We have some brands like this, such as Selpaknapkin and Du┼čakabinshower cabin. And they see ZF like these brands.

But the situation is different, so well try to explain history of ZF, what its and what kind of products they produce briefly. Firstly let me say that, ZF is abbreviation of ZAHNRADFABRIK. And this word means gear factory in German. So its a factory that was established to produce gearwheel, a German brand as we said.

We need to turn to 1902 if we want to understand the history of ZF properly. Its founder is Alfred Soden, an engineer, and he was started to work at Daimler which is Mercedes of present in 1902. He was working from 1902 to 1906 and later he passed to MAN.

He worked at MAN brand in between 19061910. Later, there were huge air balloons as you know for cargo or passenger transportation at past, which is named as zeppelin. He admired to these vehicles and he applied to that firm and started to work in there. Also he worked at a good position at firm. These happened in 1910 and zeppelins had a need like that: because of zeppelins are being so different vehicles, they werent be completely compatible with the gear technology etc. of that times and some new technologies needed.

More silent, more compatible and bigger. For that reason, a mission was given to Alfred Soden. He must make an improvement on gear mechanisms. For that reason, there was a veteran man on this topic from Switzerland, Max Maag. An engineer experienced about cone gears.

So they made contact with him and consequently by supports of the founder of Zeppelin and its head manager of that times, ZF firm was established. So an apart firm was established to just produce gears to Zeppelin vehicles. And ZF firm was established in 1915.

Later, manufacturings were continuing on that way. However they saw potential on different vehicles, automobiles, because automobile sector was developing at that times. They produced car transmission for the first time in 1919, it must be a 4speed transmission. But they couldnt reach a commercial success.

Because they are new at sector, so they couldnt reach to wanted results in that times conditions. However when we come to 1921, the founder, Alfred Soden, invent a transmission Soden transmission. A different transmission, it works better. Soden transmission was a bit more developed in 1925 and these developments were continuing.

When we come to 1929, Aphon transmission was produced. The point of Aphon transmission was being of gear shiftings on a more silent and easy way. This was a revolution. Already the meaning of Aphon is silent in Greek, dont pass without mention it.

When we come to 1932, now ZF is a giant firm. And they turned towards different products by watching developments at automobile sector. First of these was steering wheel mechanisms. And they cooperated with American Ross firm.

American Ross brand have had some pioneer technologies. So they brought these technologies to Europe, various patents of Ross were started to use on German cars as a result of a 5year agreement. When we come to 1934, so 2 years after the agreement with Ross, ZF brought in something very important and new.

Synchromesh Gearbox which was talked, Aphon, was started to use as fully synchromesh, after designing. And this made really a revolution on automobile industry. And this system was used on most of German cars.

In 1937, on no longer just cars, ZF transmissions were started to use on agricultural instruments, trucks and other vehicles. 1939 is a pretty important year for ZF. Because WWII started. After World War II start, many German automotive and spare part brands started to manufacture for army.

ZF too supported this production on same way. Trucks, very different vehicles, they produced transmissions, gearboxes etc. for Panther Tanks. 6speed, 7speed transmissions were designed at that times.

But in 1945, war is over and Germany lost the war. As a result of losing the war, as in most of other German automobile firms, Allies seized these firms and French army seized ZF. As a result of this seizure, this was continuing to 50s and allies did some manufacturings.

Even some cooperations were done with some French firms. However in 1950, French army gave this firm back to Germans. More precisely they passed it in to them.

It entered under Germans rule again, to Zeppelin Foundation as we said. After this date, ZF made a huge effort and raised. They made many productions to very different tractors and vehicles.

For example when we come to 1960, they also started to make important advertising campaigns. There were a car of Aston Martin that played in James Bond movie, its gearbox was ZF. Of course they didnt make this just for advertising, it existed on that car already for real.

So, ZF became a very good brand that is used on an English car. It very developed and was started to be loved and appreciated. Even their relationship with English was continuing. In between 19611968 with Lotus which is known with their race cars, a sport car producer, a serious relation was started with them.

And 4speed manual gearbox of ZF was started to use on race cars of them. They obtained this gearbox by using a standard automobile gearbox and developing it. Lotus gained many championships and won the first place in that era.

Of course ZF gearbox had a part in these achievements with its durability and technology. Also 1965 was a very important year for ZF. Because the first automatic transmission of ZF was produced at that date.

And this gearbox was used on BMW 1800 and BMW 2000 series cars. It was a 3speed transmission. Also it was used on Peugeot 504.

May you ask that why Peugeot, because we mentioned that they was under control of French army between in 19451950. So a very good relationship has occurred between them at that times. And a French man that works at that times in ZF firm, later he became a senior manager in Peugeot. As a result of this relationship, he used ZF gearboxes on 504 model.

In addition, 504 model is one of the legendary cars of Peugeot. Many people knows it, it was very popular on our country too. So, the automatic transmission that is used on that car was same with BMW cars and attracting notice with being ZF made. ZF made huge developments from the date of producing of automatic transmission till 90s.

They founded many different factories at many countries and started to manufacture very different products. 1991 is also very important for them, because the first 5speed transmission that is used on an automobile was produced by ZF. This gearbox was used on BMW E36 body 3 Series 320i 325 model cars also on again BMW E34 body 5 Series 520i and 525 model cars.

Later, the upshift love of ZF was continuing. In 1999, this time 6speed automatic transmission was used on BMW E38 body 7 Series car. Of course these talked gearboxes are fully automatic transmissions with torque converter. This is an important point. On the other hand, from 1999 till 2009 this 6speed automatic transmission was used on many BMW cars commonly.

In 2009, this time the top point was raised to 8speed automatic transmission. Also these transmissions are sometimes known as 8HP too. They are used on many different cars at present. So, its design was made and firstly was started to use on BMW F10 bodies. Afterwards, 8speed automatic transmissions existed in the simplest term on Volkswagen Amarok cars, existed on Audi Q7 models, on Bentley, Rolls Royce, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, cars like Chrysler or Dodge even existed on Jeep models, all of them are same transmission, but they a bit developed it.

And their torque bearing capacities are different, for that reason more durable versions are available. However its design is same on all of them, ZF transmission that is called as 8HP. When we come to 2011, level was raised to 9 but in a different way.

It was used for transverse engines, so for the cars that is front wheel drive and 4×4 cars that has front wheel drive base. For example on Range Rover Evoque, Land Rover Discovery Sport, on some models of Jaguar and Fiat. So ZF 9speed transmission is available on these model cars.

The 8speed transmission that we talked just yet exists on longitudinally located engines, I mean rear wheel drive, or on different versions of 4×4. As seen ZF is a brand that is a serious pioneer at automatic transmission topic from past to the present. Apart from that, Mercedes produces their own automatic transmissions. Also there is a Japanese producer, Aisin.

Aisin produces for Opel and some Japanese car brands. Mazda and some other Japanese brands produces their own transmissions. However we can say that ZF is pioneer at this topic.

Of course they dont produce just fully automatic torque converter transmission. They also produced CVT transmissions to Ford in 2004. Apart from that they produces dualclutch transmissions at present, this is called as PDK and is used on Porsche cars.

For example, all of 7speed and 8speed PDK transmissions were made by ZF. In addition to all these, retarders for busses and trucks, different type chassis components, various warning mechanisms that are used on cars, even electronic equipments. ZF is continuing to produce very different products at present too. And their product range is changing day by day. We completed our ZF reviewing.

We saw and learned that ZF is a very different brand, not being composed of just automatic transmission and automatic transmission is not called as ZF. I hope you liked our review. Thanks for watching us. What is the ZF that gives its name to the automatic transmission? Hello everyone.
